Participatory research (PR) is a set of multi-disciplinary approaches that share a core philosophy of inclusivity, especially between the researchers and the community. It recognises the value of engaging the stakeholders, users and beneficiaries as partners in the research process towards the knowledge generated by the research study. Over the last few decades, interest in PR has increased across the development sector as well as academia because of its potential to bridge gaps between research and practice, addressing social justice and creating conditions for people to take control of their own situation.
Decision makers, advocates of marginalised populations, researchers and people in the community have questioned the social and cultural validity of studies conducted by researchers who know little about the people, culture, and context in which the research was done. Many communities have expressed dissatisfaction when they are treated as subjects of evaluation and have no information on the outcomes of the research. Parallelly, practitioners and policy makers have experienced frustration regarding research that does not address specific needs or resource limitations. To transform conditions that influence and change the lives of people requires collaboration between academic and non-academic stakeholders. Engagement of the intended users, beneficiaries and stakeholders in the research process enhances commitment to using research findings to act to improve their existing condition.
This course is designed for students, programme managers and coordinators, grassroots implementers, organisational leaders, CSR personnel, researchers, academicians, trainers, consultants, policy makers, and anyone else who wants to develop an understanding of participatory research, to implement this in their work.
